About Mesa Valley Vision
Overview
MVV-HCP is an accredited K-12 public contract school that supports home and community based learning in Mesa County. Each learner’s education is centered on a Vision Individualized Learning Plan (VILP) that is specifically designed to address individual educational goals, needs and interests. The VILP guides the learner’s educational focus throughout the year. MVV-HCP offers support for the implementation of the VILP in a variety of ways.
History
Six local families initiated bringing MVV-HCP to Mesa County in the spring of 2006. They were represented by Gerund Coonprom, Gail Giandonato, Brenda Nordstrom, Craig Richmond, Susan Scofield and Stephanie Yeager. The founding families were brought together by their common experience with home and community based learning as well as their deep commitment to public school choice in Mesa County. The founding families presented a proposal to the School District in August, 2006. In April, 2007 the local Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to support the endeavor. Additionally, the District Accountability Committee, Mesa Valley Education Association and School District Administration were all consulted, and formally agreed, that the establishment of the MVV-HCP would enhance the educational opportunity and quality within the School District. In February, 2008 the Colorado Department of Education recommended approval of MVV-HCP to the State Board of Education which voted unanimously to grant the waivers required to create the school.
Governance
MVV-HCP is governed by a local non-profit corporation, Mesa Valley Vision, Inc. (MVV, Inc.) which has entered into a partnership with the Mesa County Valley School District Board of Education (the District) to manage the school. MVV, Inc. is governed by a Board of Stewards which is comprised of volunteers from the local community.
Instructional Program
The centerpiece of the MVV-HCP instructional program is the Vision Individualized Learning Plan (VILP). The VILP addresses individual goals and growth in the core subject areas of reading, writing, math and science – as well as non-core subject areas which may fall into the categories of social studies, physical education, foreign language, fine arts, performing arts, technology, community service, extra-curricular, applied learning and business/employability. MVV-HCP learning may occur in homes, in traditional school classrooms, throughout the local community and beyond.
Support
Enrolled families work directly with a MVV-HCP resource consultant who meets with them on a monthly basis, or more frequently as needed. Resource consultants offer assistance with VILP development and review by assisting with goal writing and the creation of strategies to meet those goals. Resource consultants have familiarity with a variety of educational resources as well as the Colorado Model Content Standards. Specialists for the core subjects of language arts, math and science review assessment data and offer direction on each learner’s VILP. MVV-HCP middle and high school learners have access to up to three classes per semester at traditional District schools as a “crossover” learner. MVV-HCP compiles an extensive listing of mentors and enrichment programs (all mentors in our directory have passed a criminal background screening). MVV-HCP provides networking opportunities which include parent workshops and outings for its enrolled learners as well as funding in the amount of $2,000 per learner per year, for the implementation of VILP goals (some restrictions apply).
Documentation of Instruction
Enrolled families document instruction hours using our online database, which can be done from home. MVV-HCP learners are required to document a minimum of 720 instruction hours per school year, between the dates of July 1st and May 31st. Kindergarteners are considered part-time and only document 360 instruction hours.
Assessment
MVV-HCP learners participate in all assessments used by the District. The assessment schedule can be found on the FAQ tab of our website. Detailed information about each assessment can be found at this District Assessment Office link:

Graduation
The MVV-HCP graduation requirements are the same as those for all other District schools, except that we provide four unique pathways for graduation: Distinction, College Bound/Conventional, Conventional and Individualized. Our learners may begin working on high school credits as early as the 8th grade and as late as their 21st birthday. Those credits may be earned in a variety of ways: traditional (Carnegie), work study, assessed proficiency, transferred, arts & life skills, portfolio documentation and public presentation/exhibit. Graduates pursuing the Distinction or College Bound/Conventional pathways complete a Graduation Essay with details their transformational learning to-date as well as their future goals. Graduates must demonstrate proficiency in Colorado Benchmark Standards in language arts, math and science to a Graduation Committee by submitted 10th grade CSAP data, SAT/ACT data, NWEA data or another reputable nationally standardized assessment with a writing sample.
Staff
Our staff includes an executive director, office manager, funding administrator, technology coordinator, achievement coordinator, assessment coordinator/curriculum specialist, family advocate, instructional program coordinator, reading specialist, learner support specialist and several resource consultants. The school operates on an eleven month cycle beginning July 1st and ending May 31st. Our office is closed the month of June.
Is the Mesa Valley Vision Home & Community Program right for my child?
MVV-HCP requires a high degree of parental involvement, similar to what is commonly known as “home schooling”. In order to determine if MVV-HCP is right for your child, please ask yourself the following questions:
Does my child have a parent or another designated adult available to:
- Be physically available for instruction an average of four hours per day on weekdays?
- Take responsibility for instruction, planning, grading, motivating, etc. by being the primary teacher, or overseeing a designated primary teacher?
- Provide transportation to and from learning activities?
Does my child thrive in an alternative learning environment?
Will my child participate in the District assessments?
If you answered “yes” to these questions, MVV-HCP may be right for your child. Please download and complete an Application at
